We are looking for a skilled digital product designer with at least 3 years of experience in the field to join the Obra Studio team.

We're looking to expand the team with somebody who can bring their unique vision to grow Obra. We're not just looking for any designer - we're looking for a highly motivated designer, who stays on top of the interface design world, and who is ready to grow and do their best work.

You need to be a highly autonomous manager of self, who thrives in a remote environment.

Requirements

  • You are able to translate design requirements into user flows. Better yet, you are able to formulate your own design requirements and interpret the client's situation into a brief.
  • You can switch between working in low fidelity and in high fidelity at the right time in each project
  • You can draw detailed wireframes to communicate a user’s journey in a visual manner that is easy to follow. You aim to understand the business of the client and become a mini-expert in their domain.
  • You have a strong visual eye and know how to make designs that are visually appealing. You can make a pixel perfect design with beautiful vectors; but you also know when that's not needed.
  • You have the ability to create detailed and balanced visual designs. You understand user interface design is all about trade-offs: what you put on the screen is a deliberate decision.
  • You can communicate the reasoning behind your designs, and explain what you did and why. When discussing your designs with your team, you understand how the group feedback loop makes a design better
  • You can collaborate effectively in a remote team environment with time differences
  • You have experience designing both desktop apps and mobile apps. Better yet, you've designed something that is out of the traditional app box, like embedded computer software, a watch app or something else.
  • You know how to make design tangible by creating prototypes. At Obra, we have a big focus on making things as real as possible. Strong prototyping skills are required for this position.
  • You are an excellent communicator, both written and orally.
  • You a Figma expert: you can work fast and know how all major features work.
  • You've experimented with AI tools and have an opinion on what works and what doesn't in your design process.

Languages

  • You speak English fluently
  • You speak at least one of these other languages fluently: Dutch, Spanish

Nice to have

  • You can work with other tools than Figma, like Illustrator, Photoshop, Sketch and Framer for certain design tasks
  • You’ve ran usability tests before and have your techniques to do so
  • You have HTML, CSS and JS skills
  • You are proficient in front-end development and can work with one or more of the following frameworks to develop app prototypes: Svelte, React, Vue, Angular, Ember
  • You have a graphic design background and can switch between traditional design tasks and UI/UX tasks
  • Bonus: you speak French fluently

What we offer

  • Employment with a competitive salary commensurate with experience
  • A learning environment where you can become the best designer you can be
  • A work environment that is all about doing your best design work
  • A remote work culture

What if I don't tick all the boxes?

We are open to discuss where you can grow. At Obra, we put a heavy emphasis on career growth and growing as a designer.

We will talk about the gaps in your skills and your growth path, and how you can grow to be a better designer. Depending on wage and type of agreement, we provide our designers with mentoring options.

However, don't apply if this is your first job and you don't match the 3 years of experience, or if you don't match the location requirements. These are non-negotiable.

Location

This is a remote position, but it's not location-independent.

We are aiming to build teams that generally work remote, but that can meet each other to work together, and because of this, we are only hiring in two locations: Belgium or Mexico City

Belgium

  • Payroll: we only accept full-time workers.
  • Freelance: depending on rate and experience, we are looking to fill between 100 and 220 days with a renewable contract

Mexico

  • Freelance only
  • Part-time or full-time
  • Remote with on-location work in our office in Condesa, Mexico City, 1-2 days a week depending on part-time or full-time
